FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia

Regional Planning Meeting for GEF-9 and GCF-2

Ankara (Türkiye), 02/09/2025 - 04/09/2025

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been working in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) since 2006, and with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) since 2016, towards the transformation of agrifood systems to achieve climate-resilient food systems, while addressing the complex environmental challenges inherent in this process. Both organizations play a key role in the global climate finance architecture – as of March 2025, FAO has secured over USD 1.9 billion in GEF grants, leveraging another USD 13.4 billion in co-financing pledges to help more than 130 countries. Meanwhile, GCF has mobilized USD 10 billion during its first replenishment, and invested in transformational climate initiatives totaling over USD 40 billion (including co-financing) across more than 100 countries.

To support these efforts, FAO is organizing a workshop on climate and environmental financing mechanisms to increase capacity, collaboration, and exchange within FAO country offices, governmental GEF Operational Focal Points (OFPs) and GCF National Designated Authorities (NDA) from 2 to 4 September 2025, in Ankara, Türkiye. The event will provide a forum for important discussions and the development of potential integrated proposals and strategies for the ninth replenishment cycle of GEF (GEF-9) and GCF’s second replenishment (GCF-2).

Additionally, the workshop provides an opportunity to explore other potential sources of resource mobilization for the region on climate and environmental finance, in alignment with country priorities, under the three Rio Conventions – the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
