FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia

Regional Training on Geographic Information System (GIS), Forest Inventories, and Open Foris Tools

(Türkiye), Hybrid Event, 14/07/2025 - 18/07/2025

Organized by the FAO–Türkiye Forestry Partnership Programme, this regional training aims to strengthen technical skills in forest data collection and spatial analysis. The training is implemented under the project “Improving Biodiversity and Sustainable Forestry (GCP/SEC/025/TUR)” in collaboration with the CBIT-Forest II Project.

The training will introduce participants to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), forest management inventories, and open-source tools such as Open Foris Arena and Collect Earth Online (CEO). The session on 14 July will provide foundational knowledge on GIS principles, spatial data types, basic software (QGIS, ArcGIS), and mapping techniques. This will be followed by advanced, online sessions (15–18 July) focusing on transparent forest monitoring, remote sensing applications, and field data integration using Open Foris.

Targeting technical experts from eight countries, the training promotes regional cooperation, transparency in forest data, and alignment with global frameworks such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Paris Agreement Transparency Framework.

Participants will complete the training programme with enhanced capacities in geospatial tools and forest inventory methodologies, laying the groundwork for applying these skills in national planning and pilot activities.
