FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia

Regional workshop on Integrated Pest Management practices and findings in Central Asia and Türkiye

Budapest (Hungary), 07/05/2025 - 09/04/2025

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a sustainable approach to pest control that reduces reliance on harmful chemicals, safeguards human health and the environment, and enhances agricultural resilience. Under the FAO project about pesticide life cycle management and POP pesticide disposal in Central Asia and Türkiye, extensive IPM field trials were conducted between 2020–2025 across five countries—Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Türkiye.

These trials, conducted in apple orchards, tomato, and cabbage fields, demonstrated that reducing pesticide use can lead to better pest control outcomes than traditional chemical-based methods. Importantly, these improvements were achieved without increasing costs, proving that sustainable pest management is both effective and economically viable.

As part of the closing activities of the project, a two-day regional training will be held to present project achievements, share lessons learned, and enhance regional knowledge exchange. The event will include a field visit to an orchard near Budapest, where participants will observe the application of IPM practices in action.
