Workshop "Climate-Adaptive Silviculture (CAS) – a professional decision-support package"
Belgrade (Serbia), Hybrid Event, 06/11/2026
9.30-14.30 Belgrade time (CET)
The hybrid workshop marks the transition of the Climate-Adaptive Silviculture (CAS) package from its development phase to its first operational application under the project “Enhancing the resilience of Serbian forests to ensure energy security of the most vulnerable while contributing to their livelihoods and carbon sequestration (FOREST Invest)”.
The event will explain why CAS is needed and how it strengthens Serbia's existing close-to-nature forest management framework. CAS supports professionals in selecting interventions that are appropriate for specific site and stand conditions, management objectives and climate risks, while helping justify species selection, genetic diversity, reproductive material and technical design choices. It also integrates biodiversity safeguards, financing considerations, implementation quality, monitoring and risk management into a transparent and verifiable decision-making process.
A key objective of the workshop will be to demonstrate CAS as a coherent decision-support pathway. The presentations will present how the main document, annexes and application tools function together, where professional judgement is required, and how technical criteria, implementation requirements, safeguards and monitoring are interconnected.
Participants will also learn about the role of the Training of Trainers (ToT) programme in supporting its future application and they will be guided through a pre-case study and a completed application form, illustrating the logic, methodology and practical use of CAS. Participants will be able to ask questions and provide feedback during the demonstration, while the workshop will also provide a platform for discussing barriers to wider national application of CAS and practical options for its integration into existing forest management systems and procedures.
The workshop is organized within the framework of the project “Enhancing the resilience of Serbian forests to ensure energy security of the most vulnerable while contributing to their livelihoods and carbon sequestration (FOREST Invest)”, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management and the public enterprises “Srbijašume” and “Vojvodinašume”, with financial support from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and co-financing from the Government of Serbia and FAO.
