World Food Day 2026 celebration in Hungary

15/10/2026 - 31/10/2026

World Food Day (WFD), celebrated annually on 16 October, is the flagship global campaign of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to raise awareness of food security, nutrition and sustainable agrifood systems.

To mark World Food Day 2026, FAO is coordinating a programme across Hungary under the global theme “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.” The programme combines FAO-organized flagship events in Budapest with activities led by participating organizations in Budapest, Gödöllő, Kecskemét, Mohács and Szeged.

This year’s theme recognizes that innovation extends far beyond technology. It encompasses scientific research, education, public policy, entrepreneurship, traditional knowledge and community action – all of which contribute to building more sustainable, resilient and inclusive agrifood systems. The programme showcases these diverse forms of innovation while encouraging citizens to explore how today’s ideas and choices can help nourish tomorrow.

By mobilizing institutions and food businesses across the country around a common vision, the initiative positions Hungary as an active participant in the global World Food Day movement and demonstrates the country’s commitment to innovation for sustainable agrifood systems.

As the lead coordinator of the initiative, FAO acts in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Hungary and the Municipality of Budapest to implement the programme.

Programme of events

The twenty-first World Food Day food donation convoy celebrates the power of cross-sectoral partnerships, with food donations from the private sector, coordinated by the Hungarian Food Bank Association and FAO with support from the Ministry, reaching Hungarian families in need. The food convoy will inaugurate the World Food Day programme.

The press event at  Heroes’ Square will feature high-level representatives of FAO, the Hungarian Food Bank Association, and the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture and Food, as well as – in light of this year’s focus on innovation – renowned Hungarian food scientist and experts.

Markets of the future, 16 October 2026  | 10:30 – 12:00 | Central Market Hall

High-level representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Municipality of Budapest, together with FAO, WFD partners and invited media, will visit one of Budapest’s iconic public markets.

The visit creates space for conversations with local producers and vendors, demonstrations showcasing innovative and sustainable food production practices, short public talks by FAO experts on topics such as food safety, healthy diets, sustainable food production, food loss and waste, and innovation in agrifood systems, tastings of local and seasonal products, and opportunities for media interviews and public interaction.

‘Food that connects us’ outdoor photo exhibition, 15 – 31 October 2026 | Town Hall Park (Városháza park)

An open-air photo exhibition will highlight the diversity of foods and culinary traditions across Europe and Central Asia, complemented by short stories explaining how communities are preserving traditional food heritage while embracing innovation for a more sustainable future.

In addition to these flagship events, the World Food Day month in Hungary offers the public many more activities.

In mid-October, public institutions, universities, museums, science centres, international organizations, cultural institutes, civil society, retailers, restaurants and other partners will organize a coordinated programme of activities across Hungary and online.

Food businesses are also helping bring World Food Day messages directly to consumers and employees. Participating companies include Auchan Retail Hungary, Detki Keksz, Fitorex Food – YASO, Nutriqa Foods, Orsi, Spájz Szörp, SPAR Hungary, Tesco, Valoryz and Wolt, with activities ranging from food waste awareness and food donation to community and employee engagement and consumer communication.

The campaign will also reach people in their leisure time. The Puskás Arena, the Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport and Malom Központ in Kecskemét are joining the campaign by displaying World Food Day messages and visuals on their digital screens.
