World Food Safety Day webinar: Prepare for the unexpected in Europe and Central Asia

Virtual Event, 25/06/2024

Every year on 7 June, FAO and the World Health Organization (WHO) invite everyone to observe World Food Safety Day, to celebrate the achievements and remember that ensuring food safety is a shared responsibility. This year's events are framed by the theme "Food safety: prepare for the unexpected."

Despite our best efforts, unforeseen circumstances can sometimes compromise food safety. These could range from power outages at home, food poisoning at local restaurants, voluntary recalls of contaminated products by manufacturers, outbreaks from imported goods, and natural disasters. The potential economic consequences of unexpected challenges, as well as their impact on consumer health, highlights the need for effective management and clear coordination among all institutions involved in the food safety system, starting from the central to local levels.

In Europe and Central Asia, countries are continuously improving their systems for managing food safety risks known and emerging, and also enforcing their multi-sectoral coordination skills to be prepared for the unexpected.

With this in mind, FAO and WHO are organizing a joint webinar at 11.30 to 12.45 on 25 June, targeting practitioners and policy makers in food safety, animal health and plant health who contribute to managing food chain risks, as well as representatives of the private sector, food producers and associations, and consumer groups. The virtual event will provide a platform to discuss means of preventing future food safety issues from occurring, how to be better prepared for them, and to share examples from the countries in the region.

The webinar will be held in English with simultaneous interpretation into Russian.
