FAO webinar puts agricultural research in focus

22/07/2020

Agricultural research is central to unlocking the potential of agricultural innovation and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It is essential for increasing productivity and promoting sustainable agricultural growth, as well as alleviating poverty.

FAO organized a webinar focusing on Europe and Central Asia on “Agricultural research in Europe and Central Asia in the post-COVID-19 era: Can be produced more with less?” The event discussed information and experiences with governments and research institutes on the relevance of agricultural research and innovation in adopting and promoting new and innovative technologies for increased food production with fewer resources.

“In the recent months, we have been more focusing on the short-term needs, while this webinar allows us to put a topic on the agenda that’s for longer term,” said FAO Regional Programme Leader Raimund Jehle in his opening remarks.

He underlined the role of agricultural research in introducing new and innovative technologies. “FAO assist countries in unleashing the potential of agricultural research for eliminating hunger and poverty, and ensuring a sustainable future for all.”

This webinar, part of a regional series, supports dialogue among countries and partners on the future of agricultural research and the role of innovation in agricultural and sustainable production practices in food security in the region, especially for the most vulnerable.
