FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia

Three years of cooperation ahead for FAO and the Hungarian agrarian university

25/08/2017

Topping several years of collaboration, the Hungarian Szent István University and FAO’s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia signed a memorandum of understanding today, covering a three-year period.

The accord recognizes the partners’ common global interest in “promoting improved coherent action for achieving sustainable development in food security” – particularly in Europe and Central Asia.

Another common element is the importance of knowledge-sharing in their work. Their cooperation therefor enhances information sharing on topics, such as agriculture, rural development or the social and economic impact of agriculture.

FAO scholarship fellows study at the higher educational institute, many of them even gained practical skills at the FAO office in Budapest.

Last November, during José Graziano da Silva’s visit in Hungary, the FAO Director-General was given the honoris causa title of the University.

Beside of these, many FAO trainings and workshops, among others on eAgriculture, were co-organized by the two organizations.

This area will remain as a cornerstone of their cooperation, with other topics adding to this, such as integrated pest management, climate change mitigation, animal wellbeing, and animal genetic diversity conservation, and some more.
