Countries and experts unite to combat forest invasive species across Europe and Central Asia

Experts, policymakers, researchers and forestry practitioners from across Europe and Central Asia gathered in Kyrgyzstan from 9 to 11 June for the Annual Meeting of the Forest Invasive Species Network for Europe and Central Asia (REUFIS), advancing regional efforts to address shared forest health issues and invasive species threats.

In total, representatives from 22 countries and one organization participated in the meeting. Seventeen countries attended in person, while representatives from six countries and one organization joined online. Country reports on pest status were presented by 19 countries.

Held alongside the International Conference on “Walnut-Fruit Forests of Kyrgyzstan: World Natural Heritage, a Global Treasure for Biodiversity, Climate and Sustainable Development”, the meeting brought together representatives of national forest authorities, research institutions, international organizations and technical experts to discuss forest health and invasive species issues affecting the region. The two events were organized in parallel, creating a unified platform for policy dialogue and technical cooperation on forest health and invasive species management.

Launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2017, REUFIS serves as a regional platform that brings together forest managers, policymakers, scientists and other stakeholders to strengthen cooperation, exchange knowledge and address forest health and invasive species challenges across Europe and Central Asia.

A key focus of this year's meeting was the state of walnut-fruit forests and their protection from pests and diseases. The session examined how insect pests, plant pathogens and invasive species affect these unique ecosystems and explored ways to improve forest health and resilience.

Opening the session, Almaz Musayev, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic, underlined the global significance of Kyrgyzstan's walnut-fruit forests and the role of international cooperation in supporting their conservation and sustainable management.

Experts from Türkiye, Italy and FAO presented an overview of major insect pests and diseases affecting walnut and other nut-tree species, highlighting the importance of monitoring, surveillance, early warning systems and integrated pest management in reducing the impacts of pest outbreaks and preventing the spread of invasive organisms.

Climate change and its influence on forest health were also examined, including how changing environmental conditions can affect pest dynamics, place additional pressure on forest ecosystems, and influence the spread of invasive species and diseases. Presentations addressed phytosanitary measures aimed at preventing the introduction and spread of pests and pathogens through international trade and the movement of planting material. Speakers highlighted the role of phytosanitary certification, biosecurity measures and international standards in helping prevent the spread of pests while supporting the safe movement of planting material and forest products.

In addition, country presentations provided updates on forest health issues affecting nut-tree species across Central Asia and shared experiences related to pest monitoring, biological control, forest protection measures and sustainable management practices.

Particular attention was given to Kyrgyzstan's walnut-fruit forests, which are recognized among the world's largest natural walnut forest ecosystems and are an important reservoir of biodiversity and genetic resources. Effective forest health monitoring and pest management are essential to protect these forests for future generations.

REUFIS continues to play an important role in addressing forest health and invasive species challenges across Europe and Central Asia. By bringing together experts and institutions from across the region, the network supports efforts to strengthen forest resilience and improve preparedness for emerging threats.
