FAO and Turkmenistan partner to modernize cattle breeding services to support livestock productivity

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the State Association of Livestock and Poultry Industry of Turkmenistan have launched a new project to strengthen cattle breeding and expand access to reliable, high-quality artificial insemination services across the country. The project aims to increase the number of pedigree cattle in Turkmenistan and to increase national capacity to provide effective and high-quality artificial insemination services to support the widespread introduction of livestock breeding methods using modern digital technologies.
The agreement for the project, "Development of Cattle Breeding and Artificial Insemination Services," was finalized during an online ceremony attended by Gochmyrat Atayev, Chairman of the State Association of Livestock and Poultry Industry of Turkmenistan, and Viorel Gutu, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia.
Running from September 2026 to February 2028, the initiative focuses on practical ways to boost livestock health and productivity, introduce digital tracking tools, and support farming families whose livelihoods depend on livestock.
Smarter breeding, better tools for local farmers
Turkmenistan has significant potential to improve artificial insemination services. The project aims to enhance the quality of these services, increase the technical capacity of the State Association in this area, improve quality assurance systems, and promote the wider adoption of advanced breeding practices among farmers to support the development of sustainable livestock production in the country.
Over the next 18 months, the project will support the development of a national roadmap for cattle breeding and standard operating procedures for laboratory and field services. It will also introduce a sire information system to improve genetic and pedigree records and help prepare an updated National Sire Catalogue.
FAO will work with national counterparts to review breeding regulations and technical policies, upgrade laboratory equipment and strengthen the capacity of artificial insemination technicians and field veterinarians.

By combining modern equipment with real-world technical skills, the project aims to deliver lasting benefits where they matter most – in local communities and rural areas.
