Santiago de Chile - On Wednesday, June 22 at 11:30 a.m. in Chile, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, will hold an online seminar to promote the digitalization of the rural world, through the 1000 Digital Villages Initiative.
The event will feature the participation of Julio Berdegué, FAO Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean; Máximo Torero, Chief Economist of FAO; Fabrizio Bresciani, Leading Economist of the Latin America and the Caribbean division of the International Fund for Agricultural Development Fund (IFAD); Juan Pablo Ceballos, General Director of the National Digital Agency of Colombia; and Germán Otárola, Project Manager for Latam of Microsoft's Ariband Initiative.
One of the axes of FAO's work at the global level is to provide support and assistance to countries to expand the access and use of digital tools in agri-food systems and rural territories. Within this framework, the 1000 Digital Villages program was launched by the end of 2020.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, 1000 Digital Villages has promoted and fostered digitalization in rural tourism experiences, helping local communities take advantage of the digital tools provided to improve their marketing strategies and sale of tourism services, increase their income and generate employment opportunities.
This meeting will allow disseminating the progress of the initiative during its first year of operation, as well as multiple rural digitalization experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean.
